Cations(Y-521)
Alkali metal ions can be analyzed with a 4mM nitric acid eluent. When using nitric acid eluent, the divalent and trivalent cations in the sample are absorbed onto the column, thus after the injection of many samples the ion exchange capacity decreases. When this phenomenon happens, 100 micro-L of 1M HNO3 should be injected several times to regenerate the column. When performing analysis of monovalent cations using IC Y-521 column, use a line filter IC Y-521L upstream of the injector.

6. Cs+
Column : Shodex IC Y-521 (4.6mmID*150mm) Eluent : 4mM HNO3 aq. Flow rate : 1.0mL/min Detector : Non-suppressed coductivity, Polarity(-) Column temp. : 40deg-C
Alkaline earth metal ions can be analyzed using IC Y-521 with a tartaric acid/ethylene-diamine eluent. Using this eluent, other divalent cations also elute and their retention times are shown on the graph by arrows. After a long use of this eluent, it will be difficult to change to a nitric acid eluent. Therefore, the use of a column exclusively for the analysis of alkali metal ions is recommended and another for alkaline earth metal ions when both type of analysises are performed routinely.

Tap water and red wine were analyzed using IC Y-521.
Tap water and red wine contain Zn2+ as well as Mg2+ and Ca2+. Since the trivalent cations such as Fe3+ and Al3+ are changed into complex ions and elute first, they never remain in the columns nor damage them.

Tap water(Water), 100micro-L
1. Zn2+
2. Mg2+
3. Ca2+
Red wine, 10micro-L
1. Zn2+
2. Mg2+
3. Ca2+

Alkaline earth ions were analyzed using IC Y-521. When both alkaline earth and transition metal ions are contained in the sample, the latter ions elute first by adding EDTA-2Na to the eluent, and as the result, the former can be selectively detected . (A) shows the chromatogram without addition of EDTA-2Na and (B) shows the chromatogram with addition of 0.01g of EDTA-2Na per 10mL of sample.
